JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:   Serve as an effective liaison for teachers, administrators, parents and students between school, home and community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall learning experience for children. Focus to be on prevention as well as correction.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Ability to visit all school locations as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
  2. Physical stamina to handle challenging work schedules.
  3. Exercises sound judgment on sensitive issues.
  4. Ability to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with students, staff, and families.
  5. Ability to organize, work with details and follow through.
  6. Possess a personal interest in helping youth succeed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s in Social Work required.
  2. Practicum experience or on-the-job experience in providing social services or counseling assistance.
  3. Demonstrate effective human relations skills and understanding of principles of youth development.
  4. Ability to interact effectively with students and parents in solving student problems, and in helping to resolve school/home-related problems.
  5. Possess a means of transportation.

 DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES: 

  1. Maintain close communication with the parent of students.
  2. Assist in the adjustment of all students and their parents to the new school environment in Ferguson-Florissant.
  3. Inform administrators and teachers of educational needs and problems of students.
  4. Work closely with the parent, student, principal, and teacher concerning the personal adjustment of the child and problem resolution.
  5. Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, principal, and families to identify areas needing improvement/intervention.
  6. Work with schools to address discipline, bus and attendance issues.
  7. Make home visits as needed in fulfilling the responsibilities noted above.
  8. Support schools with cultural and diversity understanding of students.
  9. Assist schools in setting up special conferences with parents on an as-needed basis.
  10. Support the schools in committee work, activities and events.
  11. Assist the principals in checking truancy problems, recognizing signs of abuse/neglect, and identifying issues related to poor academics and social behaviors of students.
  12. Maintain files on referrals and other notes on district platforms summarizing problem situations.
  13. Coordinate charitable activities.
  14. Provide crisis intervention which is geared primarily toward protecting the safety and emotional wellbeing of children.
  15. Facilitate small group counseling with at-risk groups of students.
  16. Maintain case files and reports, using district platforms, to track student problems and progress and to recognize patterns in behavior.
  17. Actively participate in building level Care team process to identify supports for students.
  18. Implement the Migrant and Homeless policies of the District. Coordinate summer scheduling for intake for students-in-transition during summer and fall admissions rush. Be the site contact for implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act.
  19. Refer students and/or families requiring long-term intervention to internal partners and outside resources such as social agencies, physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other professionals.
  1. Perform other duties and special job tasks as may be assigned by the Principal/Director of Student Services.
  2. Work year round and serve as the Social Work representative with professional learning, new social worker orientation, monthly department meetings, and other Social Work department organization. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Assigned to a 260 day work calendar; 8 hours per day; compensation and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) as provided by the Board of Education.
