Little Creek Outdoor Science Teacher

 

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: Prepare for and teach high school Field Biology courses.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. A valid Missouri professional teaching license in Biology or Unified Science

  2. A minimum bachelor's degree with emphasis in science.  Master’s degree in education or science preferred. 


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Prepares for and delivers instruction for the high school science classes:

xamples of Work Performed:

  • Meets with the K-12 Science Coordinator regarding the materials needed for instruction, partner meetings, and forest and prairie management.

  • Plans daily instructional activities for Field Biology students including the development of lesson plans, materials and assessment tools which meet the individual needs of the students.

  • Holds high expectations for all students and sees themselves as facilitators of student learning.

  • Organizes and uses a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials and technology to maximize the learning of each child, individually and in group settings.

  • Be willing to use the outdoor spaces as a learning lab for students.

  • Assesses student progress, both formatively and summatively, providing parents, student and administrators with specific feedback regarding individual student performance and uses the results to adjust instruction as needed.


2. Assists with animal care and handling.

 

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Assists as needed with large animal care.

  • Handles small wild and domestic animals as part of some instructional programs.


3. Performs other duties as needed/assigned.

 

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Coordinates with the teacher-in-charge to help plan summer camps with community partners.

  • Coordinates with teacher-in-charge and Little Creek staff on community and school involvement. 

  • Assists with weekend programming at Little Creek (on average about 5 Saturday mornings each school year).

  • Partners with current Little Creek partners such as Missouri Conservation Department, Audubon, US Fish and Wildlife, National Parks, and US Army Corp of Engineers.

  • Seeks out grants to help fund conservation work at Little Creek.

  • Organizational skills and multi-task flexibility. 

  • Discretion in managing confidential information. 

  • Comfortable working in the outdoors/indoors with large groups of children and around animals.

  • Excellent human relations skills. 

  • CPR, First Aid training and CDL preferred but not required.
