JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: The major focus of school nursing services is the promotion of health, prevention of illness and the early detection and correction of health problems.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. School nurses facilitate normal development and positive student response to interventions.
  2. School nurses provide leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.
  3. School nurses provide quality health care and intervene with actual and potential health problems.
  4. School nurses use clinical judgment in providing health care services.
  5. School nurses actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current LPN license in the State of Missouri
  2. Must know current ideas and trends in the health area
  3. Must maintain updated CPR/AED certification and training in the areas of communicable diseases
  1. Must have computer skills

 

Education – Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing Program, by state law, Chapter 335, must practice under the supervision of a registered professional nurse or a licensed physician.

 DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Students:

  • Provide immediate intervention for students with health problems.
  • Work with students and families to enable the student to achieve in school.
  • Operate from clearly defined goals and objectives.

 

Parents:

  • Serve as a contact person in the school for the parent.
  • Act as a health liaison person between home, school, and community.

Teachers:

  • Assist teachers in working with students who have individual health problems.
  • Initiate contacts and provide immediate follow-up with staff.

Community Agencies:

  • Make referrals to agencies in the community in order to provide health needs for

         students.

Screening:

  • Screen and Evaluate in the areas of vision, hearing, dental, scoliosis and

         developmental growth patterns.

Health Records:

  • Assist in health records maintenance ensuring compliance with Missouri State

Immunization Law, Sec. 167.181.

Safety:

  • Participate with the staff to provide safe surroundings for students.
  • Report any safety hazards to the administrator.

Emergency Treatment:

  • In service staff and students on the AED
  • Administer first-aid and direct students and families to appropriate health

services.

Health Curriculum:

  • Conduct demonstrations and discussions on subjects concerning health in the

classroom at the request of the teacher.

  • Assume responsibility for the coordination of human growth and development.

Medication:

  • Dispense medication and treatments to students according to District policy.

Clinic Management:

  • Responsible for creating a professional, well-organized, clean and attractive clinic.
  • Effectively monitor clinic flow.

Child Abuse:

  • Report incidents of child abuse and neglect to the Missouri Child Abuse Hotline as well as the Principal and the Director of Student Services.

Other:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Director of Student Services and Nurse Coordinator.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and to lift up to 35 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required included close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and focus and depth perception.  Specific auditory abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation and ability to isolate voices in multiple conversations.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:

The work setting involves performance in a school environment with various levels of staff and students.  The accomplishment of tasks is often interrupted by persons with special and/or immediate needs.  Work conditions feature frequent demands to address conditions, problems, and conflicts that involve students and parents with diverse backgrounds and needs.
